Discussing a salary in an interview: Here's what you should know.
4 May 2026
During the job interview process, the subject of your salary might come up. Here’s what to know when it comes to discussing it.
One of the best things about getting a new job is getting a new, higher salary. Before you bring it up in an interview, here are some things you should consider first.
1. First, do your homework
Before you can negotiate your salary, it’s important that you know what other people in the same position are earning. Websites like mywage.co.za let you fill in the industry and role and it will give you a range of salaries, based on experience.
2. Wait for the right moment
Your first-ever interview with a company is NOT the time to bring up your salary expectations. It’s best to wait until you receive an offer. Asking too early can make it seem like the compensation you’ll receive is more important than the actual job.
3. Don’t make it personal
When you are talking about compensation, it’s best to use professional language and not make it personal. Use words like ‘budget for the role’. A good way to phrase it would be: ‘Could you share the salary range you have in mind for this position?’
4. Consider the full package
Many companies don’t just offer a paycheque but all sorts of other benefits that can actually save you time and money. Consider things like bonuses, leave policies, training opportunities and contributions to funds, like provident and retirement.
5. Communicate your value
Of course, you want to make sure that you get the highest salary possible for the company’s budget. A good way to do this is by ensuring that you communicate why you are such a good fit by discussing your skills, achievements and experience.
6. Be confident but flexible
Remember – it’s not a confrontation, it’s a negotiation. Be open to a reasonable compromise, but stand firm if something is below market rate or doesn’t reflect your level of experience. You can also ask to think about it before saying yes.
