Going on leave is the time to give yourself restorative rest. This is how to make sure you make the most of your time off.

For many, it’s almost time for end-of-year leave! While you should enjoy yourself, you should also spend enough time resting in preparation for the year ahead. Here’s how to make your time off restorative.

1. Have some screen-free time

Most jobs have us staring at screens for eight hours (or more) a day, followed by doom-scrolling after hours. Limit the time you spend on your phone and laptop.

2. Block work communication

Set an out-of-office email, turn off your work phone and ignore the group chat while you are on your hard-earned break. Otherwise, you won’t be able to destress.

3. Stick to a bedtime routine

If your sleep hygiene needs improvement, now is a good time to create a calming bedtime ritual you can stick to. Try to keep your bedtime the same each night.

4. Take naps when needed

We don’t have the luxury of taking naps when we’re at work, so capitalise on it while you have time off. Short naps have been shown to have mood-boosting abilities.

5. Go slow on the stimulants

Need your morning caffeine hit to function? When you are on leave, you don’t need to be alert. Try to skip the stimulating drinks and opt for something relaxing instead.

6. Do things that bring you joy

A great way to recharge after a long work year is to engage in activities you love, such as catching up with friends, spending time in nature and enjoying your hobbies.
