Going to the beach? Make sure that your clothes look good and keep you comfortable. Here’s what you should wear (and what you shouldn’t).

One of the best things to do on summer days is to go to the beach (or dam, or pool party). While certain clothing items are made for this, others aren’t and should be avoided. Here’s what you should wear – and what you shouldn’t – when enjoying sea and sand.

Do wear…

  • A lightweight cover-up This could also be a sarong, which can be tied in loads of different ways. It should be flowy enough to prevent you from feeling hot but with long sleeves to keep you safer from the sun.
  • Sunglasses The bigger the better because the more of it covers your face the more it will protect your skin. Ensure you wear a pair that offers UV protection and has dark enough lenses to reduce glare.
  • An oversized hat When choosing a sun hat, look for one with a wide brim. This will cast enough shade to keep your face, neck and, with luck, even your shoulders out of the sun’s harsh rays.
  • Casual sandals You don’t want to wear anything fancy as they could get wet and ruined. A trusty pair of rubber flip-flops is a great option. Don’t go to the beach barefoot – the sand can get super hot!

Don’t wear…

  • Closed shoes or heels Closed shoes will lead to foot sweat (gross!) and will also become filled with sand in no time. As for heels, they will sink into the sand leaving you unable to walk properly.
  • Dark colours There’s a science to this. Dark colours absorb light and heat, which will make you feel hotter, whereas white and light shades reflect it, so you feel cooler and more comfortable.
  • Heavy, thick fabric While it is a good idea to bring a warm jacket if you intend to stay until after sunset, your day outfit should be a light fabric. Avoid heavy ones, such as cotton and denim.
  • Precious jewellery Whether it’s because a ring, necklace or bracelet has sentimental value or real monetary value, it’s best to leave all jewellery at home. Because if they fall off, good luck finding them!
